the conversation on gaydar failing should take place on the link below. here's its startup post.

Quote: so a thread on everyone's tips on what a dyke does or looks like could be a harmless way at looking at personality vs stereotypes. so, if the woman in question, friend or stranger wears stilettos, zat cos she’s portraying a stereotype or cos she just likes highly impractical shoes? if her hair is short, it is short for dyke or short for sport & easy care? when my gaydar gives an inaccurate reading could it be cos we mistake personality for stereotype? no, idea, but that’s what needs 2 b xplored here so back 2 the think tank.

I once read something that might make sense. It's badly translatable, but smt like "If it says "women" on the box, the content's usually lesbian". "Box" meaning clubs fighting for women's rights or clubs only accepting women or whatever. And to me it makes sense that women who care "more than average" about women's rights are more often than not lesbians. ...no? ![]()

no prob, crimson. a little digression is always a part of any good conversation.

I dont get the whole Lesbian and Vegetarian thing, Ive never met a dyke who was a vegetarian tho. I do agree on the lesbians being more proactive into womens rights...I guess that would have to be from the freedom of no longer being opressed by men. Jesus f*ck being in the same room as a whiney a$$ed man I feel opressed...or maybe thats just anger...either way.
One signature Im finding with alot of dykes is the wallet in the back pocket...Ive never met a dyke with a purse. And if you think of it the concept of carrying everything around with you minus your toliet is a bit strange. It could be used as a battering ram for criminals I guess...but then I think a classic stilleto switchblade or keychain mace would work better...

*raises hand* here's one! Although i call them bags, and they look quite unisex. I usually wear the type with a long strap, so it's down on my thigh. I only wear what i would call a purse if i'm really dressed up, for a formal type thing like a christening or smt. But my clothes for a formal type thing is usually a suit! Maybe that's smt typical lesbian? To wear a "female suit" instead of skirts/dresses? Although a straight friend of mine got so pissed off once she was going to a wedding, because the bride kept saying everyone HAD to wear a dress or a suit, so she wore a suit.

The vegetarian thing is one that I've probably banged on about enough - 11111 I don't think that people assume that vegetarians are lesbians, but around here they assume that lesbians are vegetarians... even if only in jest it actually annoys me a little.
As for formal occasions - I wear a suit to weddings, I feel more comfy in my lovely pinstripe suit than I would in a dress. However, when i went to a posh ball, I was wearing a dress, as was the woman I picked up there - that would be the one giving me the trouble at the moment. Oddly enough, we were at a party both wearing dresses/skirts when we had our 'chat' too. I don't know if I wear a suit because I'm a dyke or not, or is it because I don't think I look good in a dress - and is THAT because I'm a dyke?

lol, well now I can say I know of one. I was meaning more like full on guady purses...my mom has a ton and Coach makes the worst ones I think.
I just dont feel right in a dress, people say I look good in one...but I just personally feel like I look like a drag queen or something. I do however love suits, get me a pair of well fitting bootcut trousers a button down and a blazer and Im ready to go. I sometimes even like to wear a loose mans tie with it :)
